advice; moving in 11 weeks?
Posted by How To Get Organized, in how to declutterany tidbits on moving this far out. I will be gone two weekends between now and then. I have not moved in 22 years however I am organized and declutter all the time. I don’t have anywhere to put the packed boxes short of piling up my house. How much should I do now? I would like to pack boxes according to the rooms I am putting them in and then have a color chart for each box to where everyone knows where to put them. I also think I am going to move my kitchen the week before so I can have a pot of chili waiting for those moving us. I don’t want to wait too long however I don’t want to be rushed or stressed either. Thoughts? TIA

You’re on the right track and it’s never too early to pack boxes. I’ve moved several times and have even had things in storage lockers. What I do is mark the boxes with codes telling me where it’s from. I keep track of all these in a notebook with a list of the contents inside each box. I also number the boxes.
Some of the codes I’ve used when packing my home office is OD for office desk and then what drawer it’s from. Since you always tend to remember where to find a certain item especially after 22 years.
Another code would be CC – for China Cabinet since you always know what is in your china cabinet.
I find keeping the list really handy especially if you have a spare room in your new place. I’ve moved most of my boxes into the spare room and then unpack them as I need them and then I’m not living with boxes surrounding me until I can get to them. I keep the list in a small notebook that’s easy to fit in a pocket or purse.
I’ve moved too many times over the past few years and my little notebook has been a godsend.
Good Luck.

Being organized is a BIG PLUS for you! The more you can get accomplished ahead of time really helps cut back on the stress and anxiety…I moved twice in the last year and 1/2 ,and hadn’t done it in 7 years…I collected and bought boxes (from storage places and rentals stores) and had all the markers and tape in advance, too. I also purchased packaging paper, newsprint that’s blank. My way to do it is to write on each box what’s in it and what room it is to go to. I especially make it known if the contents are fragile! And I found it was helpful to number all boxes in order, too, and keep a list handy of that info. This is a great time to get rid of stuff, too, or have a yard sale if time allows. Maybe give some things to charity or as gifts?! There are places you can find online that will give you great lists of what to do and when, too! Try any of the places where one might go to rent a truck, like U-Haul, Budget, etc. And the ‘change-of-address’ Packet from the P.O. has stuff like that and coupons, also. Good luck! Moving IN takes longer…..

The color chart is a good start. Start packing the things you won’t be needing. Find boxes for the amount of things for each room. If you will be unpacking by yourself, use a special box/marking for the things you will be needing immediately upon moving in. Last time I moved, I took the time to write a list of each thing packed into a box and placed it on top, inside, the box so I wouldn’t need to dig through a whole box to find a certain item.

This is the right time for planning your move.
The decision of moving to another place is however exciting, but packing up is something most of the people fear.It is better to hire professional movers if you want hazel free move and can afford it. I recommend you a company Box who are very professional in this regard. But if you have decide to move by yourself. here are some useful tips.
The first thing is to obviously make a game plan
1)First you need Make sure that you create a complete inventory of all your belongings that you will be moving to your new address
2)Make sure you have enough help and trucks/vans to load up your boxes
3)Before you start packing up your house, decide what you really need to bring into your new home. Many things lose their value or use over the years, but you still hang on to them
4)Do not wait until the last minute for packing. Start from that room which you do not use most
3)You will need to have the following materials in order to start packing.
Strong boxes, Wardrobe boxes, Bubble Wrap, newspaper, Markers etc
You can find some good packing tips on Box site.
