Should I keep a present that I don't like, but the thought was really sweet?
Posted by How To Get Organized, in how to declutterLike 6 years ago, a guy friend who was interested in me made this super cute personalized CD with 12 songs on it that he thought would be cool for us. We never hooked up, but remain friendly the 1 or 2 times a year I still run into him. I think he’s a good guy, but just not the boy for me.
So, I can’t stand the music on the CD. It’s like techno/dance/electronica, and I have listened to it all the way through, and ….NO. I don’t dig it. To be quite frank, it gives me a wretched headache.
I am trying to declutter, and I am getting rid of all my old CDs that I don’t like, because it is really important to me to have a nice, clean beautiful home, without clutter and useless junk.
It hurts me think about throwing this away though, because it has a personalized label and a cute little picture and sleeve, and the idea that anyone went through that much work to make something nice for me is so sweet. I just love the idea of it and wonder if I throw it out, it will disrespect karma.

it was 6 years ago, he probably doesnt even remember and if he does – i doubt he’ll ask to see it! go ahead and toss it, clutter is bad!

Once a gift is given, it belongs to you. If you’re not using it, toss it. If you want to keep it as a keepsake, perhaps you could put it in a little frame.

Donate it to charity

Why not see if there’s someone you know who might like it, or give it to goodwill (mark on it what songs are on it).
No, you needn’t keep it if you don’t like it and no, it wouldn’t be bad karma even if you discarded it because you did listen to it and you have kept it quite a while, but passing it on (if possible) would be better than tossing it out. ☺

if your even doubting throwing it out, keep it, i know the feeling happens to me everytime i clean out. i get rid of the crap i hate, and hey keeping one cd from a past friend cant hurt. ull listen to it in 20 years and still love the thought of it :]

Just get rid of why you going to keep something you don’t like and just have it take up what little room it takes up.

I am a complete pack rat. I am just now getting rid of tapes from the 80s!
I know how you feel so here is my suggestion- ditch the cd and keep the label. Put it in a scrapbook or photo album. That way it isnt taking up space, but you still have the memory

Keep the gift imagine u were in his shoes..

i would keep it, even if i didnt like it. my ex bf had made an audio cassette 4 us.. it didnt properly work.. got stuck up all the time.. n v broke up on an ugly note.. but the effort he put into making it keeps me from throwing it away.. even i m a cleanliness freak.
so if u have a heart, u wont throw it away.
April 22nd, 2010 at 5:17 pm
throw it out or give it away. it’s nice that you held onto it that long already.. it’s only a CD….
April 22nd, 2010 at 5:17 pm
I know exactly what you mean. I keep the stupidest things because it has "sentimental value" but truth is you dont have to keep the cd to remind yourself of the sweet gesture. If it gives u a headache whats the point of keeping it around. Materials things arent whats important. throw it away girl!! I cant stand that type of music either..lol

I would just keep it for the future. You can show it to your kids one day and show what kind crappy music people listened to in our day, Even more, explain to them that you couldn’t believe a guy would give a cd of techno songs to somehow say that somewhere in that music symbolizes your guys relationship. TO be frank, that guy digged that music and was not really thinking of you other than maybe wanting you to dig it. Or he wanted you to hear What he thought was cool.. So in long. Keep it for that maybe. But if you decide to throw it away, I wouldn’t worry about it coming back to bite you. The guy had weak game. Sorry to be a jerk to a friend of yours.

Just keep that it just in case he ever comes over and ask about it. Which is bound to happen soon, if you throw that CD away. LOL. You don’t have to listen to it to keep it. It was the thought that counted, right?

wellif it is realy sweet then i would keep it.
but maybe your heart should decide on this.

Do you think he even remembers giving you the cd? If you don’t like it, throw it out. Or if you really are having this hard of a time throwing it out, put it in a cd folder with the rest of your burnt cds and put the foldeer somewhere with the rest of your cds. That’s what I do, just a a folder for any burnt cds and just keep it in a drawer.

Put the CD in a frame and put it on your wall. Let it be a reminder that at one time, this kid loved you, and consider it a nice gesture. You don’t have to listen to it. Perhaps someday, like 30 years from now, you will appreciate that gesture of love and friendship.

Keeping one cd around isnt going to send your clutter meter over the edge. I say keep it because its sentimental. Eventually, when you are really ready, you will get rid of just the cd itself and keep the cover, or you will get rid of the whole thing in an attempt to cleanse yourself of your past and start anew with the man you choose to marry. At least that’s what I have done.

You dont have to keep this cd if you don’t want to. I mean you’ve keptit for 6yrs now, that’s a long time as it is. It’s time to let it go if you no longer want it in your house. Your not disrespecting him.
Over time people’s tastes change. That fav. item you just had to have at that moment just doesn’t strike your interest years later. I’ve had gifts given to me that I didn’t keep forever.
